{"id":373,"date":"2007-11-26T07:11:05","date_gmt":"2007-11-25T22:11:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wombathole.com\/dili-gence\/?p=373"},"modified":"2007-11-26T07:11:05","modified_gmt":"2007-11-25T22:11:05","slug":"waste-trash-and-other-rubbish","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dili-gence.wombathole.com\/?p=373","title":{"rendered":"Waste, trash and other rubbish"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I went for a long walk along the beaches towards the Christo Rei statue recently and was amazed at the amount of rubbish washed up on the sand.\u00a0 I suspect most of it was flushed out of the Dili city drains after recent rains and later deposited to the east of town.<\/p>\n<p>This area on the east side just happens to be touristy\/relaxation side with restaurants and often used for exercise.\u00a0 It looks bad.<\/p>\n<p>Another related thing is the slowly increasing size of the ad-hoc dump on the top of &#8220;Ramos-Horta hill&#8221; (as it is often called).\u00a0 Right at the top of this hill (which has sweeping views of the seaside below) is a small area which is used to dump rubbish.\u00a0 It is at the top of a natural drainage path, which in heavy rain probably runs like a torrent.<\/p>\n<p>This drain empties into the bay area occupied by Caz Bar, Sol e Mar and as it looks right now, one or two more new establishments in the making.\u00a0 This is probably the most heavily utilised relaxation spot in Dili.\u00a0 This area is also behind a reef which at low tide extends a long way out, so any &#8220;pollution&#8221; entering this area, has a bit of a struggle getting flushed out.<\/p>\n<p>It is my guess that if this situation is left too long, horrible nasties will eventually leach out of this dump into the natural drain and end up in this nice touristy recreation area.\u00a0 And as it is behind the reef, the nasties will more than likely settle in the area behind the reef.<\/p>\n<p>This situation applies on the Dili side of &#8220;Ramos-Horta hill&#8221;.\u00a0 But on the other side, the amount of urban rubbish being dumped is steadily increasing.\u00a0 Maybe I am too sensitive, but it is becoming a disgrace.\u00a0 Piles of rubbish dumped on the once pristine areas of the foreshore.\u00a0 Try to find a clean spot to park near the water amongst the trees and you are more than likely going to find a pile of bottles or cans etc.\u00a0 Fortunately, the dogs and pigs have snaffled out all the usable organic matter before it arrives on the beach.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the used bottles do get recycled as containers for fuel, tua, and honey.\u00a0 However, it is a pity that there is no noticeable domestic waste recycling industry here because if there was a return for all the empty glass bottles, plastic bottles and cans, I am sure there are plenty of people who will clear it up.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I went for a long walk along the beaches towards the Christo Rei statue recently and was amazed at the amount of rubbish washed up on the sand.\u00a0 I suspect most of it was flushed out of the Dili city &hellip; <a href=\"https:\/\/dili-gence.wombathole.com\/?p=373\">Continue reading <span class=\"meta-nav\">&rarr;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[16],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-373","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-environment"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/dili-gence.wombathole.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/373","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/dili-gence.wombathole.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/dili-gence.wombathole.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dili-gence.wombathole.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dili-gence.wombathole.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=373"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/dili-gence.wombathole.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/373\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/dili-gence.wombathole.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=373"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dili-gence.wombathole.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=373"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dili-gence.wombathole.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=373"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
